An unrivalled relationship
The US and UK share a deep and historical commercial relationship, which is unrivalled by any other that we have in Europe. In 2004, trade between our two countries totalled more than $82bn, and two-way direct investment was valued at more than $636bn. The Department of Commerce recognises the important role that BritishAmerican Business plays in this relationship.
The Commerce Department and BritishAmerican Business share a worthy mission – the continued expansion of US/UK trade and investment. BritishAmerican Business has devoted significant efforts to maintaining and extending its services to members and to promoting the mutual trade and investment interests of its membership in both countries.
Our respective business communities have responded. BritishAmerican Business has grown steadily since its founding, becoming a forceful and respected advocate for deeper transatlantic co-operation. As Secretary of Commerce, I pledge to help strengthen the relationship this Department has formed with BritishAmerican Business and to work together to fulfil our common commitment.
Our two nations share common values and business practices. We also share the belief that our continued prosperity and improved quality of life will reflect the commitment of our respective business communities to innovation and technological advances. President Bush has asked me to lead the US side in a joint US–EU dialogue toward fostering transatlantic innovation. The UK will be instrumental in creating this forum, and we look forward toBritishAmerican Business’s involvement in this process. I welcome all BritishAmerican Business members as partners in this endeavour.
