Maryland

From communications to electronics to pharmaceuticals to petroleum, Maryland hosts the US offices of such important British businesses as BAE Systems, British Petroleum and Rolls Royce (Marine Systems). More than 800 foreign-based businesses prosper as a result of the state’s unique combination of business resources and strategic assets.

Maryland’s prominence as a business location for international companies is tied to its proximity to the federal government – a critical source of funding, technology and business legislation. The state boasts a mature industry base, including prime contractors and small, tech-savvy R&D companies, as well as leading academic and research institutions that develop new technologies and produce highly-skilled workers. These resources create a successful triad of government, business and academia that make Maryland a great place to do business.

Maryland is a prime location for international business because it:

Maryland borders Washington, DC, the centre of US international relations and home to numerous foreign embassies and global monetary organisations. It is home to leading aerospace and defence companies such as BAE Systems, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and such federal agencies as the National Institutes of Health and the National Security Agency. BAE Systems alone employs nearly 100,000 people and has annual sales of around $18bn.

The Halcrow Group – a British company that designs and manages major transportation and infrastructure projects with operations in 70 countries – has chosen Maryland as its US presence. Halcrow operates in 70 countries and has narrowed its search for a US headquarters to Montgomery County, Maryland.

According to the Area Managing Director of Halcrow, Charles Oldham: “A location in the State of Maryland is highly suitable, with access to federal decision makers and transportation links to other key US markets. Maryland’s Department of Business and Economic Development has been a gateway into the US market and has provided a successful partnership that creates mutual benefits for all involved.”
