Alabama has seen unprecedented economic growth in the past decade. Alabama companies announced 469 projects in 2005 alone, with investments of more than $4.6bn. These announcements drive home the fact that our economy has rebounded and is stronger than it has been in years. From the Gulf Coast to the Tennessee border, new jobs are being created and unemployment is down. Alabama is clearly heading in the right direction.

These jobs have most notably been in the automotive, aerospace, plastics, technology and biomedical industries. Particularly, Alabama’s emergence as a prime site for automotive manufacturing has also meant thousands of jobs for the state’s economy. Our state has become one of the new leaders of North America’s automotive industry. Through the Alabama Development Office and our economic development partners throughout the state, we have explored, and in many cases successfully brought to Alabama, business opportunities from across the globe.

These efforts have brought quality jobs to our state’s residents and have allowed the state to aggressively compete in the global marketplace. While bringing new industry to our state is important, working with our existing industries is also a vital part of our business strategy. Eighty per cent of new jobs in the state traditionally come from existing industries, and we work hard to ensure that companies that locate in Alabama grow and prosper.

Opportunities abound for both our new and expanding industries through the state’s comprehensive transportation system, skilled workforce, available sites, competitive incentive programmes, and an excellent network of colleges and universities. Our workforce training programme has been named the best in the nation. This programme is designed to provide the best candidates for employment at no cost to the employer.
